Structure and Support
The Yale Student Environment Coalition is a non-profit, student-run group at Yale University. YSEC is dedicated to greening the Yale community and the surrounding area, and promoting environmental protection regionally, nationally, and internationally. YSEC was founded in 1986 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit group. YSEC has a Board of Overseers composed of Yale faculty, key YSEC alumni, and other environmental leaders. The Board meets twice a year to advise the Steering Committee and Co-Chairs on proposed and current projects, and to approve the budget. The Co-Chairs and Board of Overseers work solely on a volunteer basis. It receives generous support from the Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies, Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Dwight Hall, and the Social Justice Network.
The Kroon Fund
Andrew Kroon BK ’05 was a passionate campus environmental activist and former YSEC co-chair who passed away a few weeks before his college graduation. “His environmental conscience was absolutely staggering in scope,” said former Berkeley Master John Rogers. While at Yale, Andrew co-authored a report about sustainability on campus. “That report,” Yale College Dean Peter Salovey said, “was very influential in helping to establish the kinds of sustainability policies…that we see on campus today.” Andrew’s parents established the Andrew Kroon Memorial Fund in the spring of 2006 to honor Andrew’s commitment to campus environmentalism. YSEC has allocated 70% of the fund for sending students to environmental conferences around the nation. The remaining 30% is reserved for expanding and formalizing the environmental community at Yale.
You can apply for Kroon funding to attend a conference. The conference should relate to the environment in some way, but you have a lot of discretion to find a conference that interests you. It could be sponsored by a student group, a university, a government agency, an NGO, or an industry group. It could be about science, policy, or activism. It could be in Boston or Birmingham. If you would like to go to a conference but can’t find one that interests you, let us know. We can help point out some conferences that might be interesting. The best advice is to start looking now. Many conferences have registration deadlines weeks in advance of the conference. Download the application from the home page of this site.
